The Challenge – Process Engineering

Client: Life Science
Objective: Optimize process parameters and identify process improvements with existing equipment.

​Sterling Engineering was engaged by an F500 Global Life Science company based on our 40+ year relationship and specific experience regarding fermentation. The challenge was to duplicate an existing process to another building on the same site. Based on our expertise, we were able to optimize process parameters and identify process improvements as part of the transfer.

• The current production building was scheduled for a long-term, critical shutdown driving a tight deadline for completion. Due to product shelf life, production of these critical diagnostic products needed to continue.
• Equipment lead time and supplier material delays posed additional timeline challenges.
• The client’s fermentation subject matter experts were part of the R&D organization, and could not be dedicated to support this Manufacturing project.
• Client needed a company that could operate independently and deliver project specifications with limited direction.
• In addition to the initial scope client needed somebody with knowledge and experience of equipment and facilities used for fermentation.

Our Solution

• Sterling Engineering provided a SME Project Manager with over 20 years of experience in Formulation and Fermentation.
• We identified upgrades to improve product quality, yield, and efficiency.
• Sterling Engineering provided technical support and project engineering support for specifying equipment, facilities upgrades, construction coordination, and supplier selection.

The Results

• Based on the positive outcomes, this team has been extended to continue on similar projects in other departments.
